Trying out layouts for my e-newspaper

Blue/white colour scheme - the Guardian is a large British news outlet, and I feel that using a similar colour scheme to theirs will make a quick note to readers that I am attempting to mimic the look and feel of a British media outlet. Additionally, it has a clean aesthetic that doesn't strain the eyes too much, with only part of the page consisting of the trademark colour, with the rest being a neutral white.

1) I like the idea of having an animation to open up my e-newspaper. I got this idea from looking at some e-Newspaper apps, such as the Guardian. Additionally, it is quite conventional for smartphone/tablet apps to open up with their logo before booting into their contents - as a quick but notable introduction.
Once I decide on a logo, I want to try experiment with how I could animate it visually, and also practically - perhaps using Motion or Photoshops animation creator.

2) I want my first page of content to look like a header page at the top of newspaper, where the newspaper logo is used as a visual header at the top of the page. On the right of the page you can see 3 boxes that I would have link to other articles - perhaps a 'featured articles/breaking news' function. It would give the viewer a quick glimpse as to what is in store for them going into the app. For my first article, I need to quickly show that my article is going to be set in a modern setting, using images of perhaps current relevant leaders in the Arab World (King Salman of Saudi, for example).

3) Here I thought about where I could place my first interactive aspect of my e-newspaper - a scrollable slideshow. It is a common occurrence for modern apps to implement scrollable frames, as users as used to being able to scroll at their own leisure, rather than having to sit through a timed slideshow. With this and the links used on my first page, I am giving users a CHOICE of what they want to see something I want to highlight.

4) As my story revolves around the Caliph finding the body of a woman buried at sea, It will be relevant to have a map showing the location of where the body was found. This would highlight to the viewers WHERE I'm setting my story. Perhaps Saudi Arabia, Syria, or Iraq. I want it to be a country that is full of controversy in modern politics. However, as the woman is found in the river Tigris, it would probably be more relevant to locate the map in Iraq. This map could be animated, showing the potential of having motion in my e-newspaper.

5) I don't want EVERY page to consist of animated/interactive objects, as it may get overwhelming or boring quite quickly. Therefore, here I have tried having a conventional static image. However, rather than having a boxed image, I could have the image overflow from its frame, using clipping paths on Photoshop to wrap text around its boundaries.

6) As execution is quite a main theme in this story, (with Caliph constantly mentioning that he will execute those responsible) I feel that it would be striking to have a infographic showing statistics of executions that take place in the Middle East. It is something that Western Media likes to point out when they have the chance, and there are some striking figure; http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2011/mar/29/death-penalty-countries-world
