Creating advertisements for my
e-newspaper
In order to create a genuine look of an e-newspaper, I knew I needed to embed advertisements within my publication.
In addition to this, I felt that by advertising products next to articles of serious incidents would show the consumerist lifestyle that modern newspapers force upon readers. I have always found it disrespectful when publications place advertisements for consumerist products by stories of severe despair, and this project would give me an opportunity to highlight this.

Since the overall tale of the Arabian Nights is full of many stories, I felt I should make references to these within my publication. By referencing other stories, I aimed to emphasise that my publication takes place in a modern retelling of this fictitious world.
By separating the 'Al' from 'Aladdin' I created a fictional brand of fragrances from the popular Arabian Nights story. I chose 'Aladdin' as this is the most popular Arabian Nights story, due to the Disney retelling, and therefore readers would react to the reference almost instantly.
I decided to name the advertised fragrance 'Genie' as a way of realistically referencing the recurring theme of genies - which is constant in Arabian Nights.

By using a royalty-free image of a blue perfume bottle, and also a stock image of mystical-looking desert, I feel I was able to emulate the look of a high quality perfume advertisement.
I also decided to create a continuous version of the add that build up over 3 pages, mainly for variety. I produced 3 separate variation of the advertisement background, so that the frame panned downwards with each advert.
Premium subscription promotion
Whilst I was looking at digital newspapers I noticed that many promote a subscription, which entitles readers to more access (as seen with the Guardian subscriptions above).
Therefore, I decided to create a mock version of this for my newspaper.

I used the Guardian's subscription prices as a template and created this full page advertisement, which I placed throughout my e-newspaper. I feel that this gave my digital publication a very genuine looking experience - as many modern apps are 'freemium', meaning they are free to download but force users to pay in order to get the 'full experience'.
In order to emphasise this idea in practice, I also censored 3 secondary articles, that were not related to my chosen story (The Tale of the Three Apples).
